Getting started
What is Calypso?
Calypso is an AI confidante that reads between the lines of your real conversations. You can do three things with it: decode a screenshot or pasted conversation to see what the other person actually meant; chat with one of our voices when you need somewhere to talk; and swap voices depending on what kind of energy you need — gentle, direct, poetic, or playful. One voice is free to start, with no app to download and no appointment to book.
Is Calypso free?
Yes — you can start without paying anything. The free tier gives you access to one voice for chat and a regular allowance for decodes, which is enough to get a real feel for how it works. Pro unlocks the rest of the voices, removes the daily cap on chat, and turns on the synastry (star-chart) read inside the decode report. There's no free trial trick and no credit card needed to start.
Do I need an account to use Calypso?
You'll need a lightweight account so we can keep your threads tied to you, and so incognito conversations can stay separate from saved ones. Account creation is fast and we ask for the minimum we need — no social-network linking is required.
Where can I use Calypso?
Calypso runs in your browser. There's no app to download. It works on phones, tablets, and laptops; you can pick it up on one device and continue on another with the same account.
How is Calypso pronounced?
Ka-LIP-so. Same as the sea nymph in Homer's Odyssey, and the same as the music. We picked the name because Calypso, in the myth, is the listener on the shore — the one who hears the whole story when someone washes up on her island. That felt right.
Venting and chat
Is it OK to vent to an AI?
Yes. There's nothing strange or "less valid" about putting feelings into words with an AI listening — what matters is whether you feel a little less stuck after. Calypso was built specifically as a place to vent without judgment, at the hours when reaching out to a person isn't possible or appropriate. That said, an AI is not a substitute for a person you love or a therapist you trust. If you have those, Calypso isn't here to replace them — it's the in-between, the 3am quiet space, the moment after the conversation where you need to talk it through before you can sleep.
What can I actually talk to Calypso about?
Anything that's keeping you up. Common ones: a conversation you can't stop replaying; a friendship that's gone weird; the version of yourself you saw in a fight; whether you're overthinking; what you actually wanted to say; the question you can't ask out loud. Calypso doesn't require you to know what's wrong before you start — "I don't know, something just feels off" is a perfectly real beginning.
Will Calypso remember my conversations?
Yes — by default, your conversations are saved to your account so you can pick up where you left off. We organize them as threads so that the late-night vent doesn't get mashed together with the decode you did at lunch. If you want a conversation that doesn't get saved, see incognito mode below.
Can I have more than one conversation going at once?
Yes. Each thread is its own conversation with its own history. You can have a vent thread, a "what did they mean" thread, and a decode thread running in parallel and they won't bleed into each other.
What if I don't know what to say?
That's fine. Calypso's voices start the conversation — they ask what's on your mind, and they're trained to be patient with "I don't know." You can describe a feeling, drop a screenshot with no context, or just say "weird day." The voice will work with whatever you give it.
Decoding conversations
What can I decode with Calypso?
Drop a screenshot, paste a conversation, upload a text file, or send a WhatsApp / iMessage export. Calypso reads tone, attachment patterns (how each person tends to show up — anxious, avoidant, secure), response time and rhythm, who initiates and who replies short, the small word choices that change a message's temperature, and — if you're on Pro and have entered both people's birth info — a synastry chart reading on top of all of it. The decode works on any conversation: a partner, a date, a friend, a family member, a coworker.
Does Calypso work with WhatsApp chat exports?
Yes. WhatsApp lets you export any chat to a .txt file from inside the conversation (Settings → Export chat). Drop that file into Calypso and it'll parse the whole history, not just a snippet. This is the most powerful mode of the decoder because it has weeks or months of context instead of a single screenshot. The same works for iMessage exports.
What kinds of screenshots work best?
The most useful screenshots include both sides of the conversation, show timestamps if possible, and capture a full back-and-forth (3–5 messages per side is plenty). You can attach multiple screenshots in a row for longer threads. Crop out anything you don't want included — Calypso reads what you give it.
What's in a decode report?
Five things, in order: (1) A verdict in plain prose — the one-line summary you'd get from a friend who's better at reading texts than you are. (2) The pulse — three meters (warmth, effort, consistency), each scored out of ten, telling you the temperature of the conversation. (3) The attachment read — a best-guess label for how each person is showing up (anxious, avoidant, secure, disorganised) with a confidence percentage. (4) The move — a suggested next step, framed three ways: hold ground, open the conversation, or hold the silence. (5) The synastry read (Pro only) — if both people have birth info on file, the decode includes a section reading the conversation through your sun/moon/rising compatibility.
How long does a decode take?
Usually under a minute. Long WhatsApp exports take a little longer because there's more to read.
Is the decode accurate?
Calypso reads patterns in language — the same kinds of patterns a thoughtful friend would notice if you handed them the screenshot. It does that well, and the confidence labels in the report (high / moderate / low) tell you when the signal is strong vs. when the conversation is ambiguous. But the decode is one read, not the truth. The actual person on the other side of the conversation is the only one who knows for sure. Treat it like a second opinion from someone who's read a lot of conversations — useful, sometimes clarifying, never the final word.
Can I decode group chats?
Yes — Calypso can parse multi-person threads and read each participant's patterns separately. The verdict will be about the dynamic, not just one person. This is especially useful for "is my friend group being weird, or am I imagining it" moments.
What about messages that aren't in English?
Calypso can read conversations in most major languages. The verdict and report will come back in English (or your account language) by default. Slang, regional phrasing, and code-switching are handled — though the more the conversation depends on inside references between you two, the harder it is for any reader (human or AI) to fully decode.
Will Calypso tell me what to do?
It will offer options. The "move" section of every decode gives you three framings — hold ground, open the conversation, hold the silence — and explains what each one would mean in context. We don't push one. We don't tell you to send a specific message. The whole product is built on the belief that you know your situation; what's hard is reading what's in front of you. Calypso helps with the reading.
Voices and personalities
How many voices does Calypso have, and what's the difference?
Calypso has more than one voice — each with its own personality and rhythm. The range is the point: a gentle voice for when you just need to be heard, a direct voice for when you want the truth, a poetic voice for when you need it named, and a playful voice for when you need to laugh about it. The same situation will read differently depending on which voice you talk to — they pick different things to surface and say them in different cadences.
Are all voices free?
At least one is free to start. The others unlock with Pro. We don't disclose which one is the free one on the marketing page because we want you to pick by what you need, not what's free — but you'll see clearly inside the app what's included on your plan.
Can I switch voices any time?
Yes. You can pick a different voice for a different thread, or change the voice on an existing thread when the day changes. Your conversation history stays with you across voice changes — the new voice will see the context.
What if I don't like the voice I picked?
Switch. The whole point of more than one voice is that you're not stuck. Different days call for different energies.
Is there a "Calypso voice" I'm talking to, or is it the same AI behind a costume?
Each voice has a distinct personality and reading style — not just a different greeting. They will surface different things from the same conversation. We've tuned them deliberately so that the gentle voice doesn't just feel like the direct voice in a softer tone — they actually weigh different signals.
Privacy, accounts, and anonymity
Is Calypso anonymous and private?
Your conversations are private to your account and are not visible to other users. You don't need to use your real name with Calypso, and you don't need to give us your phone number or any social-network identity. We never sell personal data. Full details in our Privacy page.
Who can see what I tell Calypso?
You can. We can, in limited circumstances — for example, if we're investigating an abuse report or if we're required to by law. Other Calypso users cannot. Our staff does not browse user conversations for fun, and we have access controls to make casual viewing impossible. None of your conversations are used as training data for our AI models without your explicit consent.
What is incognito mode?
A conversation mode where nothing is saved to your history. When you close an incognito thread, it's gone — we don't keep it on our side either. Use this when you want to talk about something you don't want to remember tomorrow, or when you're testing a thought you're not ready to attach to your account history.
Can I delete my data?
Yes. You can delete individual threads, decodes, or your entire account from your account settings. Email privacy@calypso.app if you'd like a copy of your data exported first.
Is Calypso safe for teenagers?
Calypso is intended for users aged 13 and older in the US, and 16 and older in most of Europe (the specific age threshold is set out in our Privacy page). Teenagers in particular should know two things: Calypso is not therapy and not a substitute for a trusted adult, and if you are in any kind of crisis, the resources on our Safety page — including 988 in the US and Canada — will get you to a real person faster than Calypso can.
Mental health, therapy, and crisis
Is Calypso a therapist or an AI therapist?
No. Calypso is emotional-support technology — a confidante you can vent to and a decoder for conversations you can't stop reading. It is not a therapist, not a counsellor, and not a substitute for licensed mental-health care. If you are weighing AI vs. a therapist: an AI like Calypso is available at 3am, never has a waitlist, and costs less than a session — but a therapist offers diagnosis, treatment, accountability over time, the legal protections of a professional relationship, and the simple fact of being a human in the room. They aren't substitutes for each other; many users do both.
Is AI emotional support safe to use?
For most people, in most moments — yes. The risks to know about: an AI does not have the clinical judgment to recognize a crisis or escalate it the way a trained professional would, even though Calypso has safety guardrails that flag crisis language and surface the Safety page. An AI also can't follow up with you days later to see how you're doing. If your distress is acute (suicidal thoughts, self-harm urges, danger to others), Calypso is not the right tool — please use the crisis resources on our Safety page directly.
Can Calypso help with anxiety?
Calypso can be a place to put anxious thoughts into words — naming what's spiralling, having something to do with the worry at 2am, getting a second read on whether what you're afraid of is what's actually happening. That can help in the moment. But ongoing anxiety, especially if it's affecting how you eat, sleep, work, or relate, deserves more than what an AI can offer. Please see a licensed mental-health professional for clinical anxiety care — and use Calypso alongside, not instead.
Can I use Calypso between therapy sessions?
Plenty of users do. Things that come up between sessions — replaying a conversation, processing what your therapist said, working through homework — are a natural fit for Calypso. Calypso is not connected to your therapist, doesn't share your data with them, and isn't a clinical extension of their care. It's a way to keep thinking out loud between Tuesdays.
What if I'm in crisis right now?
Stop here. If you are in immediate danger or thinking about harming yourself, please reach out to a crisis line now — 988 in the US and Canada (call or text), or your local emergency number. The full list of resources is on our Safety page. Calypso is not an emergency service.
How Calypso compares to other things
How is Calypso different from Replika?
Replika and Calypso solve different problems. Replika is an AI companion you build a persistent character relationship with — over time, your Replika has memory of you, a personality you've shaped, sometimes a romantic dynamic. Calypso is not that. Calypso is built around reading conversations (the Decode pillar) and around having more than one voice to talk to depending on what you need that day — not one bonded companion. If you want a long-term AI relationship, Replika is built for that. If you want to drop a screenshot and ask "what did they mean by that," and have a confidante to talk it through with, Calypso is built for that.
How is Calypso different from Pi?
Pi is a single empathetic AI voice for general conversation. Calypso has multiple voices with distinct personalities (so the conversation feels different depending on who you pick), and Calypso has the Decode feature, which Pi doesn't — you can hand Calypso a real screenshot and get an editorial read on it. Pi is excellent for general venting; Calypso is built for the specific case of decoding a real conversation and for the case of wanting different "energies" on different days.
How is Calypso different from ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a general-purpose assistant — it can write code, summarize documents, plan a trip, and yes, also have a vent-style conversation. Calypso is purpose-built for a narrower thing: reading between the lines of real conversations and being a confidante. The voices, the editorial decode report (verdict, pulse, attachment, the move), the synastry layer, and the tone of the product are all tuned for that. If you've vented to ChatGPT and felt it was a little too eager to fix or solve, that's the difference Calypso is trying to make.
How is Calypso different from Co-Star or The Pattern?
Co-Star and The Pattern give you horoscopes and personality-style readings; their compatibility features tell you about you-and-them based on natal data. Calypso's synastry feature (Pro) does that inside the context of your actual conversation — it reads your texts and overlays the chart, instead of giving you a chart in the abstract. So Calypso is closer to Co-Star, but for the specific argument you had on Tuesday than to Co-Star, for the year ahead.
Pricing and Pro
How much does Calypso cost?
There's a free tier with one voice and a regular daily allowance for decodes. Pro is a paid subscription that unlocks all voices, removes the daily cap on chat, and turns on the synastry read inside each decode. Exact pricing is shown at checkout — we don't list it here because we run promotional pricing from time to time. You can see the current price after sign-up before paying.
Is there a free trial of Pro?
The free tier is its own thing — not a trial, not time-limited. You can use the free tier indefinitely. When we run promotional trials of Pro, they're shown inside the app at sign-up.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Cancel from your account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing cycle; you keep Pro access until then. We don't add cancellation friction.
Do I lose my conversations if I downgrade from Pro?
No — your conversation history is yours. You'll lose access to the voices and synastry that are Pro-only, but the threads you had on those voices stay readable from your account.
The technical stuff
What AI is powering Calypso?
The voices are built on top of large language models. We have a layer of our own design on top — the editorial decode report, the voice personalities, the safety guardrails, the conversation memory model. We don't generally name the underlying models publicly, because the implementation changes as the technology does; what stays constant is the Calypso experience on top.
Does Calypso work offline?
No. Calypso talks to our servers to do its reading and respond. It needs an internet connection.
Do you train your AI on my conversations?
No, not by default. Your conversations are not used as training data for our AI models without your explicit, opt-in consent. We may use aggregated, anonymized signals (like which features are used, error rates, response times) to improve product quality, but those are not your conversation contents.
How do you handle a wrong or bad response from a voice?
Email us at support@calypso.app and tell us what happened — paste the conversation if you can. We review every report and tune accordingly. If a response felt clinical or judgmental in a way Calypso shouldn't, that's something we want to know about; it's a real bug, not a small one.
What if Calypso says something concerning to me?
Email us at support@calypso.app, and — if it's urgent — reach out using the Safety page resources. We take responses on sensitive topics seriously and review reported messages quickly.
Account, support, and contact
How do I contact a human at Calypso?
Email support@calypso.app. We are a small team and try to reply as quickly as we can. For urgent matters — billing problems, account access issues, safety concerns — flag the message as urgent in the subject line and we'll prioritize.
I forgot my password.
Use the password reset link on the sign-in page. The reset email comes from no-reply@calypso.app — if you don't see it, check spam.
Can I export my conversations?
Yes. From account settings, or by emailing support@calypso.app. You'll get a downloadable archive of your threads and decodes in a readable format.
How do I report a problem?
Email support@calypso.app. If it's a bug or a bad response from a voice, paste the conversation so we can see what happened. If you're reporting misuse of someone else's private messages on Calypso (e.g., someone in your life is decoding screenshots of conversations they shouldn't have access to), we'll triage that there too.
